Styrke union demands increased compensation for oil pioneers

The labor union Styrke is calling on the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget) to fulfill its promise to increase compensation for oil pioneers who suffered health issues due to chemical exposure on the Norwegian continental shelf.

Union leader Frode Alfheim stated during a hearing in the Labour and Social Affairs Committee that the current compensation level of 8 G is insufficient. Although Parliament requested an improved compensation level to take effect in 2027, the current budget proposal does not reflect an increase.

Furthermore, Alfheim criticized the effectiveness of the existing scheme. Data from NAV as of September 1, 2026, indicates that 102 out of 149 processed applications were rejected. Additionally, while 434 million NOK was originally allocated for 2026, only 44.2 million NOK had been paid out by the end of August. Styrke is demanding both increased compensation and a review of the disease list to ensure those with legitimate claims are covered.
