Su Chi: Taiwan unlikely to be a bargaining chip in US-China talks

Former National Security Council Secretary-General Su Chi stated that Taiwan should not worry about becoming a bargaining chip in upcoming discussions between US and Chinese leadership. Speaking at the 2026 Kuok Ping Geopolitical Forum, Su suggested that the upcoming meeting between the US and China will likely focus on bilateral relations and the US midterm elections rather than Taiwan-related issues.

Su noted that because the Republican Party faces challenging election prospects, Donald Trump may not view the Taiwan issue as a strategic tool for negotiation at this time. Regarding potential arms sales, Su indicated that the probability of the US approving new sales to Taiwan in the immediate period surrounding the meeting is low, noting that such moves remain a highly sensitive trigger in US-China relations.
