Suahasil Nazara appointed as Indonesia's new Finance Minister

President Prabowo Subianto has officially appointed Suahasil Nazara as Indonesia’s new Minister of Finance, replacing Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa. The appointment, formalized via Presidential Decree No. 97/P/2026, was announced on September 14, 2026, following Purbaya’s dismissal after approximately one year in office.

Suahasil, who previously served as Deputy Finance Minister since 2019, has pledged to prioritize the health and credibility of the State Budget (APBN). He emphasized that the budget must remain a reliable instrument to support the government’s priority national programs and drive economic growth. Analysts and lawmakers have noted his extensive experience within the Ministry of Finance as a key asset for maintaining fiscal continuity.

The transition has drawn immediate market attention. Following the announcement, the Indonesia Composite Index (IHSG) saw initial volatility, opening slightly lower as investors monitored potential shifts in fiscal policy. Economists have highlighted that Suahasil’s immediate challenges will include managing the Excess Budget Balance (SAL) and ensuring coordination with the central bank and investment bodies like Danantara.

Regarding Danantara, CEO Rosan Roeslani indicated plans to coordinate with the new minister concerning dividend deposits to the state treasury. This follows previous statements by Purbaya regarding a projected Rp120 trillion deposit from Danantara for the 2026 state budget.
