Subaru BRZ maintains sports coupe presence via Toyota partnership

The Subaru BRZ continues its presence in the lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car market through a collaborative development with Toyota, which produces the equivalent GR86. A notable variant is the STI-tuned tS model, which features suspension developed by Subaru Tecnica International, Brembo brakes with four-piston front calipers, and 18-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.

Both the BRZ and GR86 utilize a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine producing 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. While the vehicles share many mechanical components, the BRZ tS is offered exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission.

Market data from the first half of 2026 indicates Subaru sold 339 units of the BRZ, slightly outpacing the Toyota GR86. Despite the current success, industry speculation suggests Toyota may eventually shift its sports car partnership from Subaru to Mazda for future iterations of the GR86.
