Subaru introduces S:HEV hybrid powertrain for Forester and Layback

Subaru is expanding its hybrid lineup in Japan with the introduction of the S:HEV powertrain, a 2.5L strong hybrid system developed with technical assistance from Toyota. This new system utilizes a series-parallel method to improve fuel efficiency and low-speed torque.

The Forester C-type models, scheduled for release in July and August 2026, will offer both the S:HEV and a 1.8L turbo gasoline option. The S:HEV variants demonstrate significant fuel economy improvements, reaching up to 19.1 km/L, compared to 13.6 km/L for the turbo models. Additionally, S:HEV grades will feature standard 1500W AC power outlets for outdoor or emergency use.

Similarly, the Levorg Layback S:HEV maintains a 63L fuel tank, the same capacity as its 1.8L turbo counterpart. By placing the Power Control Unit (PCU) in the engine room, Subaru has preserved tank space despite the added hybrid components. With a WLTC fuel consumption of 19.0 km/L, the Layback S:HEV has a theoretical cruising range exceeding 1,100 km.
