Subaru to end gasoline vehicle sales in Europe by 2028

Subaru has announced a strategic shift to phase out gasoline-powered vehicle sales in Europe, aiming to transition to a fully electric lineup by 2028. The company plans to gradually reduce sales of internal combustion engine models starting next year as existing stocks are depleted.

This decision is driven by increasingly stringent European environmental regulations, including the upcoming Euro 7 emission standards set for November 2027 and tightening CO2 requirements through 2030. The rising costs of complying with these standards, combined with a shift in consumer demand toward electric vehicles, have made the transition necessary for the Japanese automaker.

Subaru’s European market represents less than 3% of its global sales, with 23,000 vehicles sold last year out of a global total of 890,000. The transition will impact the company’s signature boxer-engine models, including SUVs such as the Forester and Crosstrek. While Subaru offers hybrid models in Japan and other markets, it currently lacks full hybrid options in Europe, making a direct move to electric vehicles a central part of its regional restructuring.
