Subaru to launch mass-production manual WRX in Japan
Subaru is developing a regular production version of the WRX with a manual transmission for the Japanese market. This move follows a limited 500-unit release of a manual WRX STI Sport that required a lottery system for buyers due to high demand.
Unlike the 6-speed TY75 transmission used in international manual WRX models, the upcoming Japanese version will feature the TY85 6-speed manual gearbox. This specific transmission was previously used in the WRX STI and is highly regarded by enthusiasts for its durability and ability to handle high power outputs.
The new model is expected to be presented around November 2026 for a 2027 release. It will utilize the current WRX chassis and the 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine, potentially featuring engine mapping inspired by racing models for improved throttle response.
In addition to the WRX sedan, Subaru is reportedly developing other manual-focused models, including a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe based on the BRZ and a 5-door hatchback aimed at mass-producing the Performance-B STI concept.
