Subaru to phase out gasoline vehicles in Europe by 2028
Subaru plans to transition to an all-electric lineup in the European market by 2028, marking a significant shift from its traditional boxer engines. The automaker intends to stop selling internal combustion engine vehicles and hybrids in the region to comply with increasingly strict European Union emission standards.
The phaseout will occur in stages. The Subaru Outback is expected to be the first model to leave the European market, with sales ending before the conclusion of 2026. In 2027, other models including the Impreza, Crosstrek, and Forester are scheduled to be discontinued.
Beyond emission regulations, Subaru cited the rising costs of updating existing models to meet rigorous European driver-assistance and safety requirements as a key factor. The company has decided to redirect development spending toward electric platforms rather than adapting gasoline models for the European market. While the transition to fully electric sales is specific to Europe, there are currently no plans to implement a global shift to all-electric models.
