Subaru unveils new electric vehicle platform prototype

Subaru has introduced a new electric vehicle prototype using a modified Outback body to test its proprietary technology. This move signals a shift toward developing independent electric platforms, moving away from its long-standing technical reliance on Toyota.

The prototype features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing a total of 380 kW (approximately 510 horsepower), capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in under four seconds. Key technical advancements include a new platform that is roughly 100 kilograms lighter than current architectures, batteries featuring approximately 4,000 cylindrical cells from Panasonic Energy, and an integrated control unit developed with AMD to facilitate remote software updates.

Subaru intends to implement this proprietary technology in mass-production vehicles starting around 2029. The company aims to use these independent developments to more quickly deliver brand-specific driving characteristics and performance.
