SUBCO announces 24,000km of new subsea cables to meet AI demand
SUBCO, a Brisbane-based operator, has announced plans to develop three new subsea cable systems totaling over 24,000km to address surging bandwidth demand driven by artificial intelligence in the Indo-Pacific. The project aims for completion by 2029.
The three systems include APX North, a 9,500km cable connecting Sydney to Japan via Guam; APX East-2, a 10,000km cable linking Guam to Los Angeles; and APX West, a 4,600km cable connecting Perth to Singapore with branches to Jakarta and Batam.
Separately, Australian firm Vocus has warned of a looming subsea capacity crunch. Vocus executives noted that hyperscalers are increasingly consuming critical resources, including cable manufacturing slots, marine installation vessels, and specialized personnel, making it difficult for other providers to meet the massive increase in demand for fiber capacity.
