Subito report: 15 million second-hand sales potentially saved 518,000 tons of CO2
A report by climate tech software Vayuu for the Italian platform Subito indicates that the sale of approximately 15 million second-hand items has potentially saved 518,000 tons of CO2.
On average, each transaction results in a potential saving of 33.6 kg of CO2. The study found that in 56% of cases, users reported that purchasing a used item directly replaced the purchase of a new product, thereby avoiding the emissions associated with the full production cycle. The CO2 savings are equivalent to the annual absorption of over 23 million trees.
Silvia Campanella, Head of Communications & Sustainability at Subito, noted that the second-hand industry generated a value exceeding 27 billion euros last year, representing roughly 1-2% of Italy's GDP. The automotive sector is a significant driver of this activity, with one car sold on the platform every three minutes. The report also highlighted the environmental impact of automotive accessories and spare parts, which saw 1.75 million units sold, contributing an additional 13,000 tons of CO2 savings.
