Sublime's Self-Titled Album Marks 30th Anniversary as 1990s Classic

Thirty years after its July 1996 release, Sublime's self‑titled third album is recognised as a defining record of the 1990s. Issued two months after frontman Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose, the posthumous record transformed the Long Beach underground band into a global phenomenon.

Blending punk, ska, reggae, hip‑hop, dub and surf influences, the album produced enduring singles such as “What I Got”, “Santeria” and “Wrong Way”. Recorded at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Studio in Austin under producers Paul Leary and David Kahne, it cemented the legacy of vocalist/guitarist Bradley Nowell, bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh. The 30th‑anniversary milestone underscores the record’s lasting impact beyond the American ska‑punk scene.
