Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that its PlayStation Plus Essential tier will see a price increase for new customers in selected regions on 20 May 2026. The monthly subscription will rise to $10.99 USD, €9.99 EUR or £7.99 GBP, and the three‑month plan to $27.99 USD, €27.99 EUR or £21.99 GBP, up about one unit in each currency. Existing subscribers are grandfathered at their current rates, except in Turkey and India where lapsing or altered plans will be charged the new rates.

The change was communicated via Sony’s official X account and has been reported in multiple markets – Poland, Spain, Greece, France, Brazil, and the United States – with local news outlets detailing the same figures and noting that higher‑tier plans (Extra, Premium) were not mentioned. Sony justified the hike by citing “ongoing market conditions,” inflation, and rising component costs, including the recent chip price increases that have pressured console manufacturers.

Reactions among gamers have been mixed, with criticism that the increase comes just before the summer sales period and concerns that it may deter new sign‑ups. No additional benefits or content upgrades were announced alongside the price change.
