Subotica celebrates Dužijanca Bunjevac harvest festival

The Bunjevac national holiday, Dužijanca, was celebrated in Subotica with ceremonies marking the end of the harvest and the preservation of cultural traditions. Organized by the National Council of the Bunjevac National Minority with support from the Provincial Government and the City of Subotica, the event included a mass, a procession, and the symbolic presentation of bread made from new wheat.

During the festivities, Provincial Secretary for Economy and Tourism Nenad Ivanišević announced continued support for the Bunjevac community, highlighting an agreement between the Provincial Government and the City of Subotica to fund the construction of the Bunjevac House. This facility is intended to further the development of Bunjevac culture and tradition.

Suzana Kujundžić Ostojić, President of the National Council, emphasized that the bread serves as a symbol of unity, history, and the connection between generations. The National Council has also proposed that the Dužijanca manifestation be inscribed as intangible cultural heritage of Serbia.
