Subotica green wall plants dry up due to drought

Plants installed as part of the first “green wall” in Subotica have dried up due to prolonged drought and extreme temperatures. The greenery, located along a fence from the intersection near the Patria Hotel to the central underpass, was intended to reduce noise and exhaust fumes.

The Secretariat for Communal Affairs, Energy and Transport stated that despite irrigation efforts, the plants perished because of high temperatures, lack of air humidity, and inadequate pot volumes that failed to retain moisture. Officials noted that heavy traffic in the area also complicates frequent and safe watering.

To prevent future failures, the Secretariat suggested that the only solution for maintaining plants in such high-traffic locations is the construction of an irrigation system. The project originally involved planting 460 seedlings at a cost of 150,141.60 dinars, excluding maintenance costs.
