Subpesca promotes co-management of benthic fisheries

The Chilean Undersecretariat for Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) recently held the third workshop of a Chile-Mexico cooperation project in Valparaíso. The initiative aims to strengthen the co-management of small-scale benthic fisheries through more participatory and coordinated resource management.

Funded by the Chile-Mexico Fund and managed by Agcid (Chile) and Amexcid (Mexico), the workshop brought together approximately 30 representatives from public institutions, academia, and civil society. Participants included members from Sernapesca, the Fisheries Development Institute (Ifop), the Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh), and the organization Conectar para Conservar.

The two-day event focused on identifying institutional gaps and analyzing the challenges facing the current benthic fishery management system in Chile. Discussions emphasized improving coordination between actors and establishing the necessary conditions for effective participatory governance.
