Suburtynė marathon to feature 24-hour continuous singing in Kaunas

The Suburtynė marathon will take place at the M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum in Kaunas, held within the context of the ‘Crosses of Lithuania’ exhibition. For the seventh consecutive year, the event will feature the continuous singing of sutartinės—a traditional Lithuanian polyphonic music form—for 24 hours, running from noon on August 14 to noon on August 15.

Sutartinės are recognized by UNESCO as part of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The marathon is designed as a community gathering rather than a performance for an audience, inviting everyone from professional singers to beginners to participate in singing, dancing, and improvising. The event is free to the public and is partially funded by the Kaunas City Municipality through the ‘Sumanymai Kaunui’ program.
