Succès Masra released from prison in Chad following presidential pardon
On August 14, 2026, Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby issued presidential decrees granting full pardons to nine political figures, including former Prime Minister and opposition leader Succès Masra.
Masra, who had been imprisoned for over a year following a 20-year sentence for complicity in murder and spreading hate speech related to the Mandakao violence, has since called for national reconciliation. In his first public statements following his release, Masra proposed the formation of a national unity government and suggested a five-year political truce to rebuild the country. However, the pardon does not erase his legal conviction or his current political ineligibility.
The decree also released eight other leaders from the former Group of Concertation of Political Actors (GCAP) coalition. Among the released is Max Kemkoye, who called for national unity and the respect of civil liberties for all citizens. While Masra’s supporters expressed gratitude for the gesture, the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS) has rejected the proposal for a unity government, stating it is inappropriate outside of a transition period.
