Succès Masra seeks amnesty following presidential pardon in Chad

Following his release from prison on August 14, 2026, via a presidential pardon from Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, Chadian opposition leader Succès Masra is seeking a formal amnesty law. While the pardon granted Masra his freedom, his legal team argues that an amnesty is necessary to erase his twenty-year prison sentence from his criminal record, which currently remains in place following his 2025 conviction for complicity in murder and the dissemination of xenophobic messages.

In response to Masra's calls for a government of national unity to foster political dialogue, the Chadian government has rejected the proposal. Minister of Communication Gassim Cherif Mahamat stated that such a move is “not at all on the agenda,” affirming that President Déby has renewed his confidence in Prime Minister Allamaye Halina and the current administration.

While the government views the recent pardons of Masra and eight other political figures as a gesture toward national reconciliation, officials maintain that the existing power structure will remain intact. Additionally, the government noted that Masra remains ineligible for office due to his standing conviction, and clarified that Pahimi Padacké Albert remains the official leader of the opposition.
