Sucre authorities close elderly care home over abuse and unsanitary conditions
Authorities in Sucre have closed a private elderly care home in District 1 following an inter-institutional operation that uncovered inhumane living conditions. During the intervention, officials found 11 elderly residents living in unsanitary environments characterized by overcrowding and improper food handling.
Reports indicate that the residents' dignity and integrity were violated, with some individuals reportedly found tied up. The operation, led by the Sucre Mayor's Office in coordination with the Ombudsman's Office (Defensoría del Pueblo), Sedeges, and health services, has triggered immediate protection mechanisms.
Five of the elderly residents are being transferred to a municipal care facility for comprehensive support, while the remaining six will remain under municipal supervision until their families can assume care. The Ministry of Public Affairs has been notified to investigate the criminal aspects of the case, and individual psychological and social evaluations are being conducted to ensure the restitution of rights for all affected individuals.
