Sudan: Drone strikes in Nyala and Red Sea kill dozens

Intensifying conflict in Sudan has resulted in significant casualties following recent aerial strikes. In the southwestern city of Nyala, a drone strike on a busy livestock market killed at least 30 people and wounded 47 others. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claim the attack targeted a densely populated civilian area and included 17 women and five children among the dead. While the RSF attributed the strike to the Sudanese army using a Turkish-made drone, military sources stated that air operations in Nyala were aimed at RSF positions and command centers.

In the Red Sea state, the human rights group Emergency Lawyers reported that at least 72 artisanal gold miners were killed in air strikes near the Egyptian border. The attacks reportedly targeted mining camps in the Shamal al-Wadi area.

These escalations occur as the Sudanese civil war, which began in 2023, continues to drive a massive humanitarian crisis. Fighting has also been reported in South Kordofan, where the RSF allegedly conducted drone attacks on mining sites.
