Sudan and Gaza face simultaneous famines amid global hunger crisis

A report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other UN agencies reveals that 318 million people are experiencing acute hunger. For the first time this century, Sudan and Gaza are facing simultaneous famines. While the global prevalence of hunger fell slightly to 7.8% in 2025, absolute numbers have increased by approximately 50 million people compared to 2015.

In Sudan, the West Kordofan region faces an imminent famine due to ongoing war, failed harvests, and soaring food prices. Aid groups report that communities in areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces are suffering from looting, destroyed livelihoods, and shortages of medicine, alongside a cholera outbreak. Other regions in North Darfur and South Kordofan also face credible famine risks.

Global hunger is being driven by climate disruptions, armed conflicts, and inflation affecting the cost of healthy diets. Africa remains the most affected region with a 20% hunger rate, while Asia and Latin America have seen better results.
