Sudan army adviser warns US ceasefire plan could cause national partition

An adviser to Sudan’s army-led authorities has warned that a United States ceasefire proposal could lead to a de facto partition of the country, similar to the Libyan model. Amjad Farid, an adviser to General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, stated that the current approach appears to accommodate the continued existence of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) within Sudan’s political future.

The US proposal, advanced by Senior Advisor Massad Boulos, suggests a 90-day ceasefire followed by negotiations to end the civil war and transition toward civilian rule. The Sudanese army has been fighting the RSF since April 2023. While the army-led government proposed changes—including an internationally monitored withdrawal of the RSF from urban areas—officials claim the US has ignored these terms.

Tensions have escalated following reports that General al-Burhan’s visa to attend the UN General Assembly in New York was withheld due to his refusal to accept the proposal. A planned meeting between a Sudanese delegation and Massad Boulos in Washington was also cancelled.
