Abdel Fattah al-Burhan messages Donald Trump on Sudan peace efforts
Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has sent a message to U.S. President Donald Trump, reaffirming Sudan’s commitment to U.S.-led peace efforts to end the ongoing civil war.
In a post on X, al-Burhan stated that the Sudanese government is prepared to work in good faith with all parties to achieve a just and lasting peace that preserves the nation's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. This outreach comes amid significant diplomatic friction. The U.S. State Department has previously asserted that neither the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) nor the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) represent legitimate constitutional authority in the country.
Recent tensions include the U.S. decision to deny al-Burhan a visa for the UN General Assembly, reportedly due to his refusal to sign a proposed 90-day ceasefire. Meanwhile, an international group comprising the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE has proposed a plan for a three-month humanitarian truce followed by a nine-month transition toward a civilian-led government. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and a massive humanitarian crisis.
