Sudan chemical weapons allegations prompt UN and OPCW scrutiny

The United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan has confirmed it is investigating allegations that the Sudanese Armed Forces manufactured chemical weapons using chlorine. Mohamed Chande Othman, head of the mission, stated that the UN is aware of information regarding these activities and will determine if credible violations of international law have occurred.

Parallel to the UN mission, a group of former Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) officials has released a report urging a formal investigation. The report cites witness testimony, unusual odors, and acute respiratory distress as indicators of chemical weapon use in civilian areas between 2024 and 2025. The findings are supported by digital evidence, including videos and photos, and suggest a possible hidden chemical program.

The UN mission also highlighted concerns regarding the role of external actors in fueling the ongoing Sudanese conflict, noting that foreign involvement contributes to the continued violence against civilians.
