Sudan cities hit by air strikes as regional tensions rise
Sudanese cities Wad Madani and Nyala were targeted by air strikes on Sunday, according to witnesses. In central Sudan, a drone strike reportedly hit the Umm Alaila fuel depot near Wad Madani. In Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, two large explosions were reported, with witnesses noting smoke rising and paramilitary forces securing the area.
These attacks follow a defiant statement by Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who vowed to continue the war against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) despite recent diplomatic tensions. This includes a US decision to deny al-Burhan a visa to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
Meanwhile, Chad has condemned air strikes in its eastern Ennedi region, which it claims are linked to the Sudanese conflict. N’Djamena warned it would take all necessary measures under international law to protect its sovereignty. Chad reported that the ongoing war has driven over one million Sudanese refugees across its border, contributing to a total of more than two million displaced people currently hosted in the country.
