Sudan denies chemical weapons claims in talks with French envoy
Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem met with French Special Envoy Jean-Mazé Sava in Khartoum to discuss bilateral relations and regional stability in the Horn of Africa. During the meeting, Salem denied allegations regarding the use of chemical weapons by the Sudanese military, characterizing such claims as false narratives promoted by local entities seeking to return to power.
Salem urged France to reopen its embassy and cultural center in Khartoum, which have been closed since April 2023. He expressed a desire for a new era of relations between Sudan and France based on transparency and facts. Sava indicated that France aims to maintain transparent relations and assist in bridging divides between Sudanese factions through dialogue.
The discussions also touched upon U.S. sanctions imposed on Sudan following accusations of chemical weapon usage. These sanctions, which Sudan has categorically rejected as illegal, include restrictions on technical and financial aid from international institutions, as well as limits on U.S. exports to the country. Additionally, Salem stated Sudan's willingness to engage in dialogue with Ethiopia if the latter ceases its support for the Rapid Support Forces.
