Sudan drone strike kills dozens in Blue Nile province

A drone strike attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed dozens of displaced people in Sudan’s Blue Nile province. The attack targeted the Abu Shandi area in Wad al-Mahi province, specifically hitting a gathering near a displacement camp and an informal gold mining site.

Reports on the death toll vary, with rights group Emergency Lawyers stating 41 people were killed, including eight children and many women. Other local reports indicated 30 to 31 deaths. The governor of Wad al-Mahi, Mahjoub Al-Sheikh, described the strike as “cowardly” and claimed the drone was launched from within Ethiopia.

The incident occurs amid a broader escalation of drone warfare in the region. A UN investigation revealed that drone strikes killed over 1,000 people in the first five months of 2026. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF has displaced over 12.4 million people and resulted in at least 150,000 deaths, according to various monitors.
