Sudan drone warfare intensifies civilian casualties

The conflict in Sudan has seen a lethal evolution as both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) increase their reliance on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Recent drone attacks across the country have killed more than 160 people in a matter of days, frequently striking residential neighborhoods.

In the Imtidad Nasser neighborhood east of Khartoum, a recent RSF drone strike resulted in the deaths of three children. This shift toward long-range, preemptive drone operations is being used by both factions to navigate complex geography and exhaust their opponents.

The civil war, which began in April 2023, has resulted in at least 59,000 deaths according to conflict monitor ACLED. The humanitarian crisis has seen approximately 14 million people displaced, with 4.5 million fleeing the country.
