Sudan leaders discuss national dialogue and peace with African Union delegation
Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris and Sovereign Council President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan met with a delegation from the African Union Peace and Security Council in Khartoum to discuss peace and stability. The discussions focused on launching a comprehensive national dialogue intended to lead to national reconciliation, constitutional reconstruction, and eventually free and fair elections to establish new leadership.
Prime Minister Idris emphasized that the dialogue must be owned by the Sudanese people and outlined “red lines,” including the rejection of any equality between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He also expressed a desire for the African Union to support efforts to classify the RSF as a terrorist organization. The government reiterated its peace initiative, which calls for the withdrawal of RSF forces from controlled areas and their subsequent integration or discharge.
The African Union delegation, led by Mohamed Khaled, expressed concern over the ongoing war, the loss of life, and the destruction of infrastructure. The Council reaffirmed its respect for Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while calling for an inclusive transitional process and a political settlement to end the conflict.
