Sudan military accused of secret chemical weapons program
Leaked intelligence documents have bolstered allegations that the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have developed and used a secret chemical weapons program. Investigations by The New York Times and The Washington Post, based on a corpus of approximately 150 military documents, photographs, and intercepted communications, suggest the military has been working to design, test, and stockpile chlorine-based munitions.
The reported program appears to be an operational attempt to break military stalemates, particularly around Khartoum, by using readily available industrial chlorine. The Sumood civilian coalition has called for an investigation by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) into these claims.
Authorities in Port Sudan have denied the allegations, asserting that the Sudanese military adheres to the Chemical Weapons Convention.
