Sudan peace efforts intensify through Arab League and UN coordination

The League of Arab States and United Nations officials are intensifying efforts to end the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy met with Pekka Havisto, the UN Special Envoy to Sudan, to discuss ways to support peace efforts and end hostilities.

The League emphasized the urgent need to halt military actions, protect civilians, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid. They advocated for a political process led by and owned by Sudanese nationals, stressing the importance of maintaining Sudan's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In Cairo, leaders from the Sumoud civil democratic alliance also held talks with Havisto. The alliance discussed the results of the Five-Party Mechanism's visit to Khartoum and pushed for a credible political path. While expressing support for the mechanism—which includes the US, UK, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE—the alliance cautioned that the process must facilitate Sudanese-led dialogue rather than imposing external solutions.

The alliance called for a three-track approach involving humanitarian aid, a ceasefire, and a political process to address the root causes of the crisis and achieve a democratic transition.
