Sudan's al-Burhan offers legal guarantees for domestic political dialogue
Sudanese Sovereign Council President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has announced a series of legal and political guarantees to facilitate a domestic Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue aimed at involving national forces in governance. To encourage participation, al-Burhan promised temporary immunity for dialogue participants, including the suspension of ongoing criminal proceedings and protection against legal or administrative actions resulting from their views expressed during the talks.
Al-Burhan emphasized that the state will provide logistical and security support but will not control the dialogue's agenda or outcomes, maintaining the process's independence. He also reiterated the military's commitment to eliminating militias, stating that peace requires the collection and restriction of weapons currently held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a separate development, Sudanese authorities reported that two groups from the RSF, comprising 21 commanders and 270 personnel, have defected to join the Sudanese Armed Forces. This follows a series of high-profile departures from the RSF, including political advisors and field commanders.
