Sudan receives over 1.1 million returnees from neighboring countries

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced that over 1.1 million people returned to Sudan from neighboring countries between January 2024 and August 2026. A total of 1,110,605 individuals entered Sudanese territory through seven specific border points.

Approximately 80 percent of these returnees arrived from Egypt, with the remaining portion coming from Chad, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. The IOM attributed the return of 54 percent of these individuals to improved security conditions in their original areas of residence.

Key entry points included the Ashkit and Argin crossings in Northern State via the Egyptian border, the Al-Qalabat–Metima crossing on the Ethiopian border, and the Al-Laffa crossing in Kassala State on the Eritrean border. Additionally, crossings in Darfur included Adikong–Geneina, Umm Dakhn, and Al-Tina, all located along the border with Chad.
