Sudan transition government decentralizes economic authority
The Government of Transition for Peace and Unity (Tasis) in Sudan is implementing a strategy of economic decentralization to rebuild functional economies in regions outside the control of Port Sudan. Amidst ongoing war and the collapse of central state institutions, the government is shifting toward a localized governance model to prevent total chaos.
In Kordofan, Commerce Minister Mohamed Ismail Abdullah Ismail is working with local authorities to structure the regional economy, focusing on commodities such as gum arabic, livestock, cotton, and gold. The initiative aims to reconnect producers to markets, secure distribution circuits, and combat monopolies and smuggling.
To manage these vast territories, the government has established an executive body based in Nyala, led by Mohamed Hassan al-Ta’aishi. This administrative shift includes the activation of the Transitional Monetary Council to regulate financial systems, control inflation, and ensure the movement of essential goods between regions and neighboring countries.
