Sudan: UN Envoy meets with leaders to discuss peace and humanitarian crisis

United Nations Special Envoy Pekka Havisto held high-level meetings in Sudan with transitional Sovereign Council President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minawi to discuss the ongoing security, political, and humanitarian crises.

During discussions with Minawi, the focus was on the need for an inclusive political process involving all civil society and political actors, rather than a solution limited to the primary warring parties. Minawi emphasized that the future of Sudan cannot be determined by a two-party meeting and stressed the importance of unhindered humanitarian aid to Darfur.

In meetings with al-Burhan, Havisto conveyed messages regarding de-escalation and civilian protection. The UN is working with partners to advance a political process and is seeking cooperation for the exchange of prisoners and civilian detainees. Additionally, the UN expressed concern over the education sector, specifically the need for unified national exams to ensure children's rights are protected, in coordination with UNICEF.
