Sudan: UN launches cholera vaccination campaign amid civil war

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners are continuing efforts to combat a cholera outbreak in Sudan despite ongoing security challenges. In collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), health officials launched a 10-day cholera vaccination campaign in the Tawila area of North Darfur to protect approximately 95,000 displaced persons.

Since the outbreak was declared in June, nearly 2,900 cases and 247 deaths have been reported across six states. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has provided emergency shelter and essential household items to 12,000 people in the Tawila, Al-Layt, and Umm Hajaliz areas.

Insecurity continues to drive mass displacement. Approximately 1,300 people fled villages in the Um Baru area near the Sudan-Chad border, while over 3,300 people were displaced from the Gisan area in Blue Nile state near the Sudan-Ethiopia border. Additionally, drone attacks targeted Nyala in South Darfur, and communal tensions are rising in parts of South and Central Darfur. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has appealed to all parties to protect civilians and ensure the safe, unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.
