Sudanese asylum applications in EU rise to 31,000
Approximately 31,000 Sudanese nationals applied for asylum in European Union countries and associated nations between March 2025 and August 2026, according to the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA). The surge is attributed to the ongoing conflict between Sudan’s military and the Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023.
Greece and France received the majority of these applications, accounting for over three-quarters of the total, with 13,000 and 11,000 applications respectively. Of the applications processed, EU member states and associated countries issued roughly 20,000 first-instance decisions, granting international protection in approximately 66 percent of those cases.
As of early August 2026, more than 11,000 applications remained awaiting a first-instance decision. The EUAA noted a sharp upward trend in 2025, with the first eight months of 2026 seeing approximately 15,000 applications—a nearly two-thirds increase compared to the same period in 2025. The agency also reported worsening humanitarian conditions in Sudan, including widespread civilian abuses and a 350 percent increase in people at risk of sexual and gender-based violence between 2023 and mid-2025.
