Sudanese Man Arrested After Entering Athens Metro Tunnel and Shouting 'Allahu Akbar

On the afternoon of Friday 24 July, a 30‑year‑old man of Sudanese origin entered the railway tunnel of the Athens Metro at Agia Paraskevi station and walked toward the Halandrion station. The incident was reported to the Immediate Action Center around 15:25, prompting a rapid police response. Officers of the Hellenic Police’s DIAS unit arrived at the Halandrion station about ten minutes later and located the suspect roughly 200 metres inside the tunnel.

The man refused to leave, shouted “Allahu Akbar, Ramazan Bairam” and assaulted the officers with kicks, punches and spitting. Because the tunnel contains high‑voltage electrified rails, the encounter was especially dangerous. After a brief struggle the police immobilised the suspect, applied handcuffs and arrested him. Train services on the affected segment were temporarily suspended but resumed once the area was secured. The suspect was charged with obstruction of transport, assault on police officers and disobedience.
