Sudanese nationals return to Sudan from Egypt via voluntary program
A group of 882 Sudanese nationals departed Egypt for Sudan on September 18, 2026, as part of a voluntary return program organized by the Al-Amal Committee for Voluntary Return. The group, which traveled via 18 buses departing from the Giza governorate, included students from various educational levels, including medical students from the University of Khartoum.
Maher Al-Zain, head of the transport committee for Al-Amal, noted an increasing number of Sudanese residents in Egypt seeking to return home. He suggested that the rising interest in returning may be linked to factors such as the declining value of the Sudanese pound against foreign currencies. The committee highlighted that these returnees are expected to contribute to reconstruction and development projects aimed at restoring stability in Sudan.
This movement follows several recent repatriation efforts, including the return of 392 people on September 10 and 980 people on September 7. Since the conflict in Sudan began in April 2023, over 1.2 million Sudanese have fled to Egypt. According to official figures, the total number of voluntary returnees to Sudan reached 428,676 by the end of 2025.
