Sudanese Student Refugees Struggle to Continue Education in Central African Republic Camps

More than 30 Sudanese university students, many from the Darfur border town of Amdafock, have fled the war in Sudan and now live in the Korsi refugee camp near Birao, Central African Republic. They cite the loss of years of study and the threat of forced marriages if they return, with one student saying, “I only want to go back to Sudan if it’s to continue my education.”

UNHCR has helped several refugees gain admission to the University of Bangui, but they must now study in French after years of Arabic schooling, face financial hardship, and cope with the psychological toll of displacement. As one student remarked, “We have already lost so many years,” highlighting the broader educational divide caused by the conflict between areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese army.
