Sudan's Burhan rejects US-led peace truce proposal

The United States is pushing for a UN-backed peace agreement in Sudan, centered on a proposed 90-day humanitarian truce. Massad Boulos, a senior US adviser, stated that Washington seeks a Sudanese-led settlement under international guarantees to prevent territorial divisions and open aid corridors. Boulos clarified that while the US is engaging with army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, these communications do not constitute formal recognition of his government.

In response, General al-Burhan has rejected international pressure. Following the US decision to withhold his visa for the United Nations General Assembly, Burhan declared that Sudan would not bow to external conditions. He vowed to continue military operations to eliminate the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) across the country, stating, “Our goal is to eliminate this militia, no matter the cost.”

The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF has been ongoing since April 2023, with diplomatic efforts involving the African Union, Arab League, and European Union attempting to facilitate a broader political settlement.
