Ontario municipalities seek role in data centre decisions

Various regional developments are occurring across Ontario. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) has urged the provincial government to ensure municipalities retain a role in reviewing and approving AI data centre projects as the province develops its “Data Centre Playbook.”

In Sudbury, local MPPs are calling on the premier to protect WSIB jobs following the agency's decision to close nine offices across the province. While the WSIB plans to retain specialists in Sudbury to assist injured workers, the exact number of retained employees remains unspecified.

In the mining sector, Discovery Mining Ltd. has reported that more than two-thirds of residents evicted from Fairway Village have sold their modular homes to the company as part of a transition program. Meanwhile, in Sault Ste. Marie, Metro and Food Basics have been recognized for donating one million pounds of food to the Salvation Army since 2021.

In Timmins, local authorities have launched the “Take Back the Night” awareness campaign to address gender-based violence. This follows an incident where police are searching for a suspect involved in a dumpster fire at the Timmins and Area Women in Crisis shelter.
