Sudivya Kumar Sonu, a senior Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader and Cabinet Minister in the Hemant Soren-led government, passed away at age 56 following a sudden cardiac arrest. He was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Giridih late Saturday night after experiencing severe chest pain but died during medical efforts to stabilize him.

Sonu held several critical portfolios, including Urban Development, Higher and Technical Education, Tourism, Arts and Culture, and Sports and Youth Affairs. He was a long-time member of the JMM, having risen from a contractor to a prominent legislator representing the Giridih constituency.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed profound grief, describing Sonu as a close associate and an “elder brother” who provided guidance through difficult times. The state government has declared two days of state mourning on September 6 and 7, with all government offices remaining closed on September 7 in his honor.

His death marks the fourth cabinet minister to pass away while in office under the current Hemant Soren administration, following the deaths of Haji Hussain Ansari, Jagannath Mahato, and Ramdas Soren.
