Sue Kemp manages osteoarthritis through long-distance running
Sue Kemp, a 76-year-old former operating theatre nurse from Merewether, has managed osteoarthritis for over two decades through consistent physical activity. Despite being diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis in 2000, Kemp opted to avoid knee replacement surgery, instead completing 20 half marathons and maintaining a rigorous exercise routine including rowing and swimming.
Kemp shared her experiences ahead of an arthritis seminar hosted by the Arthritis Movement in Newcastle. The seminar aims to provide evidence-based strategies, such as nutrition and exercise, to help individuals manage symptoms, reduce pain, and maintain independence. While Kemp currently manages pain in her neck, hands, feet, and knees, she continues to participate in weekly parkruns.
