Suella Braverman sparks debate over English identity
Reform UK MP Suella Braverman has sparked controversy following comments regarding English identity during a BBC Question Time debate. Braverman, a former Conservative home secretary, stated that she is not of ‘English origin’ because her parents and grandparents were born abroad, despite being born in London.
During the program, presenter Fiona Bruce pressed Braverman to define what constitutes being English. Braverman suggested that Englishness involves a lineage, ancestry, or connection to the country’s heritage that dates back ‘a few generations.’
Her remarks drew criticism from audience members and journalists. One participant challenged Braverman, arguing her stance reinforced racist arguments by implying that those born in the country with non-white heritage might not be considered English. Braverman responded to the accusation by asking, ‘So I’m being racist against myself?’
