Suez Canal revenue rises 42% amid maritime security shifts
Suez Canal revenue increased by 42% in July compared to the previous year. This growth is attributed to ships rerouting to the Egyptian waterway due to Houthi threats in the southern Red Sea and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz resulting from the Iran war.
In North America, Canada has implemented retaliatory tariffs worth CA$27.6 billion on various U.S. goods. This move follows the collapse of trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa.
Additionally, a U.S. Coast Guard review has warned that American port infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with the increasing size of commercial vessels, noting deficiencies in risk assessment and response capabilities. The Consultative Shipping Group has also cautioned that fragmented maritime rules could increase global supply chain costs and disruptions.
