Suez Canal traffic rises as Maersk and CMA CGM restore services

Major shipping companies are increasing their use of the Suez Canal as maritime services between Europe and Asia gradually recover. Maersk has reported that approximately one-third of its normal Red Sea traffic has resumed, covering four of its thirteen services. Notably, the container ship ‘Bangkok Maersk’ recently completed its first transit through the canal.

French shipping firm CMA CGM also announced plans to accelerate the return of its vessels and expand services through the waterway. The group reported that its net tonnage through the canal so far in 2026 has already exceeded its total net tonnage for the entire year of 2025.

This recovery is economically significant for Egypt, as the canal is a vital source of foreign currency. While carriers are returning, the process remains gradual due to ongoing security risks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Using the Suez Canal instead of rerouting around Africa can save approximately 14 days of travel time.
