Suez Canal traffic up 28% as Hormuz disruptions reroute oil shipments

Egypt's Suez Canal saw a sharp rise in oil tanker traffic in April, with 529 tankers transiting the waterway—a 28% increase over the same month last year. Overall vessel movements also grew 14% year‑on‑year to 1,182 ships, driving canal revenues to $419 million, the strongest monthly figure since early 2024. The surge is linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which have forced oil producers to use the Red Sea route instead.
