Suffolk Wildfire Near Sizewell B Nuclear Plant Highlights Climate Risks

A wildfire that broke out on 29 July in Dunwich Heath, Suffolk, spread across more than 100 hectares of heathland close to the Sizewell B nuclear power station and the proposed Sizewell C site. Residents were evacuated but no injuries were reported.

Campaign group Together Against Sizewell C (TASC) warned that the fire underscores the vulnerability of nuclear infrastructure to climate‑related events. Spokesperson Chris Wilson urged the new Labour administration to reassess Sizewell C’s climate resilience, citing the need for emergency plans that can handle thousands of workers, contractors and local residents in extreme weather.

The blaze also attracted social‑media attention. A TikTok video by a political‑science PhD student highlighted the fire’s size—equivalent to about 140 football pitches—and warned that shifting winds could have threatened the plant. The post linked the incident to broader drought conditions across the UK and increasing wildfire activity in Europe.

Both the campaign’s legal challenge and the online commentary call for stronger planning and flood‑defence measures for the nuclear complex as climate change intensifies weather extremes.
